What would make a 70-year-old man give up a 40-year career as an electrical engineer in order to get a master’s degree in secondary education and a California teaching credential?
“I was bored,” said Robert Geminder M.Ed. ’07. “Plus, I’ve always heard about the poor conditions of our schools. Instead of complaining, I decided to do something about it.”
Geminder is no stranger to the classroom. For the past 20 years, he has spoken at more than 100 schools about his experiences as a holocaust survivor who immigrated to the United States in 1947. These presentations sparked Geminder’s interest in teaching when he discovered that he really enjoyed interacting with the students.
“I engaged with young people who really wanted to learn. Their interest in the Holocaust was strong, and they asked many questions,” Geminder said.
Geminder participated in the School of Education’s secondary education master’s degree program, which prepares candidates to serve as teachers in grades 6–12. He credits LMU for providing him with the necessary tools to excel in his new profession.
“LMU’s program is outstanding in teaching its students how to manage a classroom as well as creating an effective lesson plan. I also learned how to encourage more participation from students in class discussions,” Geminder said.
Geminder completed his coursework in August 2017 and walked in LMU’s Graduate Commencement ceremonies on May 11. His wife and children attended the ceremony. It was a moment he had been looking forward to for the past year, and one he was not going to miss.
“There was no way that I was going to pass up a milestone event like that. It was a day in my life that I will never forget,” Geminder said. “I’ve learned to truly celebrate the happy events in my life.”
Currently, Geminder teaches math and science to high school students at Saint Mary’s Academy in Inglewood. His connection with the students is his favorite part of teaching.
“Seeing my students grow and excel is the greatest reward to me,” Geminder said. “I can’t wait to see how much they will accomplish four or five years from now.”
True to form, Geminder has clear plans for his future. He intends to teach for as long as he can, with no thought of retirement.
“ I get up in the morning and look forward to the day. I plan to keep teaching and keep getting better,” Geminder said. “Hopefully, it will keep me young.”
To those interested in pursuing a degree late in life, Geminder offered this advice:
“A person is never too old to learn, change professions or make a real difference in the world,” Geminder said. “Having a purpose gives life more meaning and makes a person live longer. I am much happier than I was before.”

TAIPEI, Taiwan – A 96-year-old Taiwanese man who will receive his master’s degree in philosophy this weekend said he was able to compete with younger students by pulling all-nighters before exams.
Chao Mu-he, better known to his classmates at Nanhua University in southern Taiwan as "Grandpa Chao," said he began graduate school after being told he was too old to continue as a volunteer at a local hospital.
"I was bored after I left the hospital," Chao said Thursday. "I don’t play mahjong or have other hobbies. I felt I had to do something with my life."

OAKLAND, California: It’s never too late to earn your college degree. Just ask 94-year-old Hazel Soares.
The woman was one of about 500 students to pick up diplomas Saturday during a commencement ceremony at Mills College, an all-women’s school in Oakland.
"It’s taken me quite a long time because I’ve had a busy life," said Soares. "I’m finally achieving it, and it makes me feel really good." Soares, who has six children and more than 40 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, is believed to be the world’s second oldest person to graduate from college.
Nola Ochs of Kansas became the oldest when she graduated from Fort Hays State University three years ago at age 95, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Ochs, now 98, topped that academic feat Saturday, when she received her master’s degree in liberal studies from Fort Hays.
Born in Richmond, California in 1915, Soares had wanted to attend college right after she graduated from Roosevelt High School in Oakland in 1932, but that was during the Great Depression.
"Unless you had some help, it would have been impossible to go to college," Soares said. "However I never lost the desire to go." Soares married twice, raised six kids and worked as a nurse and event organizer before she retired and decided to return to pursue her dream of obtaining a college education.
"We are really amazed and very proud of my mom," said Regina Hungerford, Soares’ youngest child. "The biggest thing that we can all learn is that we’re never too old." At Saturday’s commencement, she was congratulated by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who delivered the keynote speech, and was cheered by her classmates.
"She’s really an incredible inspiration," said Sandeep Brar, who also graduated Saturday.
Soares doesn’t plan to relax now that she finally has her degree. The art history major hopes to work as a docent at a San Francisco Bay area museum.
Through her experience, she hopes others realize that it’s never too late to get a college education.
"There’s no reason why you could not go back," Soares said. "Some people do give up the idea or postpone the idea. It’s too late. It’s too much work. They may not realize that once you try it it’s exciting to go to school."
